For any of you who do freelance work besides your own novels, have you used any fee based subscription services and if so, what are your thoughts about them?
The two I know of are WritersMarket.com which is $50 for 2 years and the AvantGuild membership at MediaBistro for $97 for two years. If you have used either one I’d be interested in hearing about any pros/cons.
And if you know of any others I should be away of, please let me know.
Thanks!
Theres one that’s something like freelance DOT com. $29 a year.
You post your credentials so people can find you. You scan new entries for jobs that might interest you.
thank you
That’s a new one for me. Thanks!
I’m curious if anyone has found LinkedIn to be useful here. I’m never sure how to use those “connections.”
I haven’t done much with the writing side of LinkedIn – really just getting started to connect with that part of the business – but working for a tech company we use LinkeIn a lot just to keep up with each other after the massive layoffs that are the nature of the valley.
I believe in LinkedIn (heck, I’d like to work at LinkedIn or SimplyHired) and think that it will continue to grow and provide a valuable service.
Elance
I used Elance — years ago — when it was free — It’s not a subscription exactly, and you bid on projects- so you’re competing with others.
I used it to get jobs writing stadardized test items for elementary students.

Re: Elance
Thanks! That’s another one I hadn’t heard of.
hey Susan,
I’m going to close my lj account since I’m not using it. i don’t use it for keeping myself organized writing my children’s book which is what i thought I’d do, and I’ve gotten myself over the writer’s block I’ve been suffering from with Laura’s writing exercises. so I’m going to just bookmark your blog and Laura’s blog and read them every morning like i always do with my cup of tea and kizzy-cat snuggled close to me. i’ll still be on facebook though.
Erica, you have to do what is right for you. No worries.
Hi Susan… When I was writing more freelance stuff I used Writers Market a LOT. They’ve got the fingers in everything, which I really liked. It sort of inspires you to try other genres and avenues just ’cause you seem them there…
Yep, I hear you on the exposure to new things! I just picked up the current version of Writer’s Market and am looking forward to reading it this weekend. That’s what I always used to do with it – read it from cover to cover with Post-its and highlighters.
Thanks!
argh – me, of course.
