I’m building a list of books (preferably MG and YA), myths, (maybe movies even) about fathers and daughters.
Anyone? Thanks in advance.

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
To Kill A Mockingbird is the first movie (it’s a book I’ve never read–so, excuse my “whatever”)….that comes to mind.
Oh God, read it! You won’t be sorry.
But Scout has a brother, too.
Do you want only girls/dads, Susan?
siblings are okay…but fathers and daughters is the main focus.
Thanks!
I know I SHOULD…I WILL….
yeah, I didn’t know if it was daughters only… But if the book’s “told” like the movie, Scout IS the focus of everything.
Thanks, Slatts!
Okay, since Winn Dixie is taken, I’ll say FOOTLOOSE. I’m really having trouble with this one!
*not italicizing, but here goes:*
A Northern Light, by Jennifer Donnelly
Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech
Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
Hate You, by Graham Mcnamee
Pure, by Rebecca Ray
Boston Jane, by Jennifer L. Holm (the first one in the series)
Freaky Green Eyes, by Joyce Carol Oates
Gonzalez & Daughter Trucking Co, by Escandon (that’s the last name)(not a YA or MG, but sounds interesting)
Some of these I’ve read, some I just found on lists.
You’re ahead of me. I hadn’t gone out searching for lists yet. Thanks!
P.S.
Oh!
And Catalyst, by Laurie Halse Anderson
Re: P.S.
I know but I think she’s mega busy. I’ll have to go nudge her a bit.
Well, my STORY OF A GIRL, but sadly it’s not out for another, oh, ten months.
A really good movie from last year: THE BALLAD OF JACK & ROSE.
BOY PROOF has elements of the father/daughter angst.
A Little Princess! Of course, Sarah’s father only appears in the early chapters and then promptly dies, leaving her in a terrible position, but his place is later filled by a surrogate father figure.
Kathy Stinson (Canadian author) has a story called “One Year Commencing” about a girl who has to go live with her estranged dad for a year because of a court order. Good story.
Movie: Fly Away Home starring Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin.
oh yes…I bawled at that movie.
Nancy Drew? Carson figures in each of the books, but he’s not a major character – still, he’s the “voice of adult reason” in her teenage world.
Myla Goldberg’s “Bee Season” — it’s not technically YA, but it’s the first father/daughter book that came to my mind. (I’ll admit that I don’t know what “MG” stands for, but if it stands for “Myla Goldberg,” I guess “Bee Season” would be a perfect fit. Or if it means “Mega Geek,” I’m totally there.)
Hahaha on the MG which is Middle Grade. I hadn’t thought of Bee Season at all but good choice. Thanks.
Movies and books
I don’t read a lot, so most of these will probably be movies only. You didn’t say whether you were looking for positive father-daughter relationships only, so just a warning that not all of these are:
Movies:
The Sweet Hereafter (based on a book by Russell Banks)
Million Dollar Baby (not actually father-daughter, but they act like it)
Ulee’s Gold (actually grandfather-granddaughter relationship)
Books:
Galileo’s Daughter (not strictly YA, but there’s nothing in it that’s inappropriate for that age)
Re: Movies and books
Hey thanks! I am trying to not screech at your comment about not reading much. (Pain to a writer’s ears.) Don’t be surprised to come to work and see a big stack of books on your desk. 😉
