Help me build a musical tears (songs that make me cry) playlist.
Criteria: male vocals only. No females. No instrumental. I realize not everyone is going to get that teary feeling at the same songs so throw them at me – all genres welcome.

Fields of Gold by Sting
Makes me tear up all the time.
Thanks!
Wake me up when September ends — Green Day
Time of your life — Green Day
Fix You — Cold Play
Everybody Hurts — REM
Yesterday — The Beatles
Tears in Heaven — Eric Clapton
And on the inspirational/lovey side of crying:
My Wish– Rascall Flats
Live like you were Dying — Tim McGraw
Then — Brad Paisley
(All my sappy tears come from country songs.) 🙂
Thanks, Kristy. Most of my sappy ones are country ones too. 🙂
Time in a Bottle – Jim Croce
Dust in the Wind – Kansas
Scarborough Fair – Simon and Garfunkle
All good ones, thanks!
Snoopy’s Christmas, the Royal Guardsmen.
Okay, so I’m weird, but when the bells ring from the village below I get chills in my arms and legs and tears well up even as I’m laughing at myself.
I don’t know that you can get this in isolation, but Garrison Keillor covered “Bringing Mary Home” on Prairie Home Companion once and hearing that soothing voice singing “It sure was nice of you to go out of your way” will jerk the tears right out of you.
“In the Ghetto,” “The Ballad of Ira Hayes,” Johnny Cash.
No, wait, the synapses are not firing today. “In the Ghetto” is Elvis; though you can bet if the Man in Black ever did cover it, you’d be bawling.
Oh gosh, can you imagine Johnny Cash doing In the Ghetto? Would love to hear him do Hallelujah too! Thanks, Peni.
Starry Starry Night makes me tear up.
Oh yeah, when he gets to the part about “when you took your life” that gets me too.
. . . this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you . . .
*SOB!*
Enjoy the teary playlist.
Exactly! Do you watch Dr. Who? A couple of weeks ago there was a Van Gogh episode and I heard this song in my head when I watched it. Sobbed like a baby.
Oh gosh — and Danny Boy. That’ll kill a person.
I was going to say this. It’s called Vincent, and it’s by Don McLean.
Broken Vow & February Song- Josh Groban
A House is Not a Home- Michael Ball
Fragile & Shape of My Heart- Sting
Smile (The Charlie Chaplin version, not the Lily Allen *g*) So many people have recorded it, that I’m sure you can find one that appeals to you specifically.)
Hallelujah- This one is odd, because like Smile, it’s been covered a gajillion times. However, my preferred version is k.d. lang, but since you said male voices, I’m not sure who to recommend.
Secret Heart, At Last, & Unbreakable- Raul Malo (Actually, any ballad by Raul– his voice breaks me, Every. Single. Time.)
Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word- Elton John
Tonight- George Michael
Who Wants to Live Forever & The Show Must Go On- Queen
I could really go on and on and on, but I’ll spare you. *g*
Chris Isaak- I Wonder
Oh, feel free to go on and on. I’m loving this because you have some new people on my list.
Only males because I very rarely listen to females and when I do, it’s mostly pop and happy stuff. They don’t seem to give me that visceral reaction.
Hallelujah is on my list – actually three versions – that’s how much it hits me.
Oh, well then, in THAT case… *g*
I will say, that with respect to Hallelujah, something about k.d.’s version evokes that rare visceral reaction (I understand what you mean about male vs. female singers because I tend to be the same way). I don’t know if because she’s an alto or simply because she’s one of the most transcendent singers ever, but between that and her version of Ray Orbison’s “Cryin'” I could just listen to her forever. You know, come to think of it, Mary Chapin Carpenter, too, and she’s another one of those alto/contralto voices. So there you go.
In terms of other male voices:
Tryin’ to Get Over You, The Reason Why- Vince Gill
When You Come Back to Me Again- Garth Brooks
Baby Can I Hold You- Curtis Kamiya
Dreaming With a Broken Heart- John Mayer
A Beautiful Mess- Jason Mraz (the live version in particular– AMAZING)
Numbness For Sound- Howie Day
Wishing on Another Lucky Star- J.D. Souther
Oh I like a lot of these a lot! I’ll give KD Lang’s version a listen. Thanks again.
Here’s a song that makes me cry:
Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross
When it came out, a friend’s husband had just died, and I was also friends with her grown daughter, so it made me sad for her when I heard it, and I would tear up.
One day, a few months after my father died, I decided to take a long lunch to go find a geocache not terribly far (yet still a drive) from where I work. On the drive over, the song came on the radio — I had not heard it in ages. I was a sobbing wreck by the time I arrived at my destination. What a mess.
another good one. Thanks!
George Jones: He Stopped Loving Her Today.
Oh yeah. Thanks for the reminder.
Nick Drake, Pink Moon
Hal Ketchum, I Know Where Love Lives
Josh Ritter, Bright Smile
John Lennon, Imagine
John Lennon, Beautiful Boy
A couple of new ones for me. Thanks!
Elton John’s The Greatest Discovery reduces me to tears every single time I hear it. It’s about the arrival of a second child to a family and should be required listening for all siblings, especially when the get on one another’s nerves!
Male vocalists almost never make me cry, but here are some nice melancholy songs I like.
Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah
Perfect Day by Lou Reed
Stockholm Syndrome by Muse
Lucky Denver Mint by Jimmy Eat World
Twin Falls Idaho as sung by Ben Folds (he makes it extra sad somehow)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7ciiU6FD7E
Don’t Change Your Plans for Me by Ben Folds
Superman by Five For Fighting
It’s funny but the things that make me cry most often are female vocals with tons of intrumental stuff. The song that can send me right off a cliff into despair is Carissa’s Wierd’s So You Want to be a Superhero. Listen at your own risk (though it prob won’t affect you since you’re immune to female vocals). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7zHZrcHdxg
hBilly Bragg and Wilco- When the Roses Bloom Again:

Gilbert O’Sullivan – Alone Again:

Hits me so much more now that my mother is gone. Can’t sing along any more because I choke up every time.

How about Bobby Goldsboro “Honey”
