This week’s memory challenge is inspired by a topic I have been thinking about a lot – friends. As a child I didn’t have a lot of very close friends….no matter what age. But I did have an imaginary friend I called Tommy. He was a little mouse who lived behind the electrical outlets in our old house and climbed along the wires to get from one room to the next. He always beat me downstairs to breakfast. We had a lot of long conversations in my room about how disagreeable vegetables were and how much we loved chocolate ice cream. He was better at math than I was but I knew how to read.
One day he just got on a bus and went away and I never saw him again.
What about you? Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?
I was about… five or six years old. My imaginary friend was the same age as me, had an identical twin sister, and refused to tell me her name. The first time I “met” her, my mother had just berated me for… something I don’t even remember what any more. Sad isn’t it?
Anyway, I was sent to sit on my bed, and I can still remember the conversation:
Her: Are you going to let her treat you like that?
Me: What? She’s my mom.
Her: *snort* My mom chases after me with a sword and is still nicer than that.
After that… well, she stuck around for a long time and morphed, when I was 11 (after the trampling) into a character named Hennae, who… well. I’ve written her five or six times, and still haven’t gotten it right. I’m going to keep trying though.

I don’t remember having an imaginary friend. As I understand, I pretty much worshipped my older sister from the second I was born, and she was the perfect big sister–she let me follow her around, made up games, and–when I was shy at camp–let me hang with her and her friends. She even taught me to read, I think. If she read this now, I’m sure she’d be asking where all that hero worship went! I think, though, she filled up every need I had that way for many years.
Son did have an imaginary friend, but it’d be more than my life is worth to talk about that.
What a wonderful memory of your special sister. Being an only child, I can’t even imagine!
