Okay, I’m trying to brainstorm other names for grandma. (Added later – this is not for a book about grandmothers. This is for my WIP and I don’t want to use Gram or Grammy or Grandmother.)
Gran
Gram
Nana
Nona
Anyone have some others for me?
Thanks!

Re: found these online—
Ohh, fun! Thank you.
My maternal grandmother, we called Mammaw. A Southern thing, I think.
I’d forgotten Mammaw!
My husband’s mother likes to be called Oma–Dutch for grandmother.
I called mine abuelita and just grandma.
I like the sound of Oma, thank you.
My boys call theirs ‘Grammy’. 🙂
Yeah, I like Grammy too.
Oh I call my grandma Grammy–i love that
My kids call their Italian Grandma, Nonnie.
I always liked the sound of Nonnie.
Yiddish (I think): Bubbi. One of my grandmothers was Grandma and the other was Bubbi.
My niece called her two grandmothers Nana (FirstName) and Nana (FirstName).
My niece called her two grandmothers Nana (FirstName) and Nana (FirstName).
I like this. Thank you.
Bubba is polish….
I’ve also heard MomMom, not sure where….
MomMom, interesting. Thanks!
though it won’t count
My oldest son kinda “kid-speaked” Grandma when he was 2 and it resulted in Baka. My boys still call my mother Baka-Nancy.
Re: though it won’t count
Why wouldn’t it count? I need a name for grandma and that is also a good one. Thanks.
I’ve known some Southern families who refer to their grandmothers as Big Mama.
I love that! Thanks.
My mom goes by Grandmommy, and I called my grandmother Ma Dear (pronounced it Madia)
If this shows up twice, my apologies. LJ isn’t showing my comment.
I like both of those a lot! This is so hard to choose.
Same as coloradowriter: I called one of mine Nonnie.
There’s also Gengie (from Arrested Development)
Take a look at this: http://www.thenewparentsguide.com/grandparents-nicknames.htm
I’ve got friends whose children call their grandma “Ladybug”. It works for them!
Now that’s fun! Thanks.
my mom calls herself Grandy which is really cute
and my grandma refers to herself as Gigi for the great-grandkids
i can’t tell you my mother in law, because i use that name in SEA. =)
okay, since it’s already suggested above, it’s Oma. =)
And no problem, Oma is all yours. 🙂
Okay, in the weird thing department, at my in-laws last night they referred to themselves as Oma and Ompa and I guess I had just never heard it before – in 10 years. (In conjunction with my brother-in-law’s dog.)
random alert!
I like Grandy!
Gigi is cute too. I guess I don’t know what I am trying to do with this. Sigh.
Names
I called one of mine Nanny. My mom called hers Bubbe (it’s yiddish).

Re: Names
I like Nanny!
My son called my mom Meema and my grandma Neema.
I also have a Greek friend that called his Grandma Yaya.
(I’m so excited I had a moment for some input!!!)
Fred Higgins
Thanks Fred! And gee, here I was hoping things had slowed down some for you.
On my side of the family, my mother’s mother was Grammy, my father’s is Grandmar (her first name being Margaret, see…)
On my wife’s side, her father’s mother was Mamaw or Mawmaw, and come to think of it, I have no idea what her mother’s mother was called. Hm.
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to have to make up my mind soon.
Most of my suggestions have been given. However, my kids have a Yia yia (Greek).
Now that’s very interesting. Thanks. Boy, it almost makes me want to do a book about grandparents.
Granny Names
My Mom goes by Ammy as her grandma name. I knew someone once who went by Grandmary. Hope that helps a little.
MeeMaw (probably someone already say that one) and Yaya???
Shawna has a Nonny.
Um, already “said”…
I think I have HEAT STROKE!
LOL. Thanks!
we’ve been having this conversation ourselves lately….
BaBa is one of the familiar ways of calling a grandparent, used in Bosnia, as well as shortening the forms from Poland and Lithuania.
I’m doing a grandmother story from china right now with PoPo.
Re: we’ve been having this conversation ourselves lately….
Interesting. I was talking to a friend from Sweden who said they had a different name depending on if it was the mother’s mother or the father’s mother. (I can’t remember what they are now.)
My grandkids call me Mema.
Oooh, I like that one!
Re: granny
Thanks, Tracie!
My son is getting married and my daughter in law to be has a child from a previous relationship. I was just trying to find a different grandma name for her to call me. Thanks for the comments that may lead me in the right direction
I call my grandma meme
Considering this myself
My daughter is due December 09 and I’ve given this a lot of thought. I think I invented this as I’ve never seen this name mentioned in any other place for names for grandmom: Granna–it’s like a combination of Grandmom and Nana. I like it because it sounds more like a name than an old lady lol. I also like Gram,MomMom and Grammy. I think they are also cute but I kind of like Granna the best.
