Here’s today Poetry Push for List Poems. It’s a great way to warm-up your poetic muscles for the day. This is just a warm-up, so don’t spend a lot of time on it, five to ten minutes to create a list poem inspired by the Poetry Push card below.
Please leave your list poem in the comments and make sure to leave your name.
Have fun!
Sweat
Susan, I’m signing on to your poetry push challenge. I love it! Here’s what I came up with this morning…
SWEAT SHOP
Sweat trickles down
my brow
neck
the wings of my shoulders
knobs of my spine
caked with dust
grit
lint
piece by piece
I work
I stitch
I sweat
my feathery fingers
slip
dart
flutter
faster than the wing of a sparrow
Stitch
Stitch
Sweat
Re: Sweat
HI Mary!
The bird/flight imagery is gorgeous here. My favorite line is “knobs of my spine”.
Re: Sweat
Thanks, Emily. How fun to play poetry with you! π
Re: Sweat
Oh Mary! I’m so glad you decided to play along. Love this image. I can totally picture the scene.
I really like:
the wings of my shoulders
knobs of my spine
and
my feathery fingers
Re: Sweat
Thanks, Susan. I’m so glad you set up this challenge. I need to play more!
Oh boy! My reward/treat for after all my errands today will be to check back here and read the comments/poems! Thanks for doing this Susan! xo
Debbi! You are welcome to join us, but only if you wish. π
Always happy to have you read along and perhaps use the prompt yourself, on your own, in your own way.
I’m still new to LJ, so I didn’t realize my indentation formatting would be lost in the comments. Now I know!
Yes, Emily, LJ plays havoc with formatting! I love this. Brings back my racquet ball days.
My favorite part is:
fuzzy wristbands
sports bra
visor headband
rubbed raw
Re: DON’T SWEAT IT
So true! Esp. about accepting things when you can’t change them.
Don’t sweat it–
Don’t pick up the socks,
Sweep up the lint,
Clear the crusty dishes from the sink.
Don’t move the pile of teetering bills,
Brush pretzel crumbs from the couch,
Wipe out the microwave.
Don’t sweat it–
It’s just me coming over
Bringing takeout
& I plan to put my feet
On your coffee table.
-Jennifer R. Hubbard
Jenn this creates such a beautiful image of a friend visiting a friend in my mind.
I wasn’t sure where it was going and then, the last lines
& I plan to put my feet
On your coffee table.
brought it all home to me. Thank you for playing.
Jenn, that is my kind of friend! π
Re: DON’T SWEAT IT
Great advice for us all, Anne. Thank you!
Sick
Don’t sweat the temperature
too hot
too cold
Don’t sweat the
Stomach rumbles
stomach tumbles
Don’t sweat the
bathroom race
Don’t sweat
not eating
not sleeping
not being able to focus
Don’t sweat the steady diet of
7-up
saltines
dry toast
It won’t last forever
even if it feels like it
so don’t sweat it.
I love the stomach rumbles/stomach tumbles, Susan. Really captures that awful feeling!
I love this, Emily. The rhyme is playful but subtle.
Don’t Sweat It
Don’t sweat it
I get it
Mama will return.
Large dots
newborn spots
make me disappear
in weeds and dappled sunlight
fool the eye
of man or beast
where she leaves me
to rest
alone
silent
still.
It’s best
while she’s gone.
I don’t sweat it.
I get it.
I’m safe.

Re: Don’t Sweat It
Becky, I like this… the large dots/newborn spots and dappled sunlight. I’m picturing a baby giraffe. Am I right?
Re: Don’t Sweat It
Mary–Actually, I had a fawn in mind, but now that you say that, I would think it fits perfectly with a giraffe baby, too. So fun to hear what it sounds like to another poet. Thanks!
Re: Don’t Sweat It
Beautiful, Becky. I love the rhythm of the words as it builds and the sense of mystery. Nicely done.
Re: Don’t Sweat It
Its a fawn. Right?
Take care,
Vicki
Re: Don’t Sweat It
You’re right, Vicki, it’s a fawn.
Becky
Sorry Susan this one did not evoke any literary gems…
Ya can’t win them all. Maybe next week. π
Don’t Sweat It list poem
Hi Everyone,
Just found this site. This looks like fun, so here is my attempt at a list poem.
Don’t Sweat It
They tell me don’t sweat it –
don’t sweat …
70.2 inches of snow
4 foot snow drifts
frozen water buckets
-9 degree temperatures
40 mph wind gusts
ice dams
cold horses
cold dogs
cold kids
they tell me …
Spring is around the corner
I’d love to be sweating it right about now
Happy List poem Day!
Take care,
Vicki
hahaha, Sue. This is great! A play on a play on a play on words.
And the frustration that many a writer feels and usually “sweats.” π
Thank you! Think I’ll back-track to Give Back today.
