Today, Jane Yolen, said goodbye to her husband David for the last time. To know a bit more about David, you can rvead his website and listen to some of his lovely bird recordings.
Those of us who have been following her journal know what a difficult time she has had watching her best friend drift away from her. Read her announcement.
Rest in peace, David Stemple. You were a good man whose time came much too soon.
Jane, we hold you in our hearts.
So very sad.
I know.
I read her journal and cried.
Me too.
It’s so very, very sad! I can’t imagine . . .
And through it all she wrote with such grace.
I admire her so much.
As do I . . .
Oh no! Susan. I hadn’t yet heard today or read Jane’s e-mail… Oh no.
Thank you for posting this news here for our community to see. He was a lovely man. Frank and I spent time with Jane Y and David during my last trip to the SCBWI Poconos conference. He was full of grace, wisdom, intellect, and a love for all the goodness of his life.
My heart hurts for Jane. {}

I have been in awe of her grace, strength and generosity in sharing this difficult time in her life. Their family is in my thoughts and heart.
I have been reading Jane’s journal every day, even though at times it was very difficult for me to do so, for I know only too well what Jane was, and will be, going through. It is never easy to say goodbye to someone you love, but it is doubly difficult when you watch them slip away a little each day. My heart goes out to Jane and her family.
I just read my e-mail this morning…
Jane was once an “honorary member” of our illustrator’s group. We would often have meetings at her large house. David pretty much stayed “out of the way” of those meetings. But it was his house too so it was impossible not to run into him. I can’t say I really knew him. There were so many of us illustrator–many of whom were very close to Jane and David. But he had freindliness about him that always made you feel like you’ve known him for years.
A very sad time, indeed!
