When words return
from a vacation they took without me
they whisper in my ear
of the many places they have been
mountains mastered, lessons learned
so many stories they share,
telling me jokes that make me giggle
until the dog raises her head
at the silence I have broken
while I race to write it all down
before the words wander off
alone, again.

So glad you’re racing and writing again. They do wander off! I do like the things you’ve written on Facebook, too!
Thanks so much, Linda! Those pesky words wander back and forth but I will keep trying to capture them.
You have a way of pinning down those words before they wander off. Keep it up Susan!
Thanks, Paul. I appreciate the support.
I hear the laughter, see the dog’s raised head, feel the fingers finding home on the keys. Smiling.
Thank you, Doraine.
This is a great poem, and so real to so many of us. I like, though, that there is no bitterness from the narrator because the words went off without her. On the contrary, there is appreciation and enjoyment. Love this poem!
